Mechanist Subclass: The Toymaster

Mechanist Subclass: The Toymaster

Art & Subclass by Allen Childers

The Toymaster mechanist creates dazzling clockwork constructs that often resemble toys to engage in entertainment and espionage. On the outside, they appear to be average clockwork toys but their inner workings are magically animated.

Augment: Dazzling

You gain the following unique effect for your augment feature. This effect can’t be replaced and doesn’t count against the number of effects that you know, as shown in the Augment Effects Known column of the Mechanist Progression table.

Dazzling

Item requirements: Toys, Cards, Jewelry, Rings, Chests smaller items that can be held in the hand or worn.

You learn to imbue an item or set of items with the ability to dazzle onlookers. While the item is imbued you can use a bonus action to gain one of the benefits of the following effects :

  • Awestruck. While the item is imbued and is within a 10 ft. radius of you; you can add your PB + INT  to any performance skill checks or CHA saves for 1 minute.
  • Mesmerized. You can choose a creature that has failed a WIS Save within a 10 ft. radius of the item the creature gains the stunned condition until the effected creature takes damage or uses its Action to make WIS Save DC: 12 + your PB.

At Higher Levels.

Once you reach the 9th level in the Mechanist Class, the dazzling effect radius extends to 20 feet.

You can use this feature as many times a day as your PB, and is replenished with a short or long rest.

Toy Clockwork Swarm

3rd-level Toymaster Feature

You create a swarm of tiny toy constructs that you control. The toy clockwork swarm is considered an object for the purposes of the mechanist augment feature. The clockwork swarm of toys can have arms, legs, tentacles, or wings and look like anything you wish. It becomes a creature under your control until the creature drops to 0 HP. The creature takes its initiative right after you and you must use your bonus action to use any of its actions. You can control the swarm if they are within 120 feet of you after that they become inanimate toy constructs. The Toy Clockwork Swarm will always take the Dodge action on its turn if it doesn’t use an action.

Revelry.  Your constructs can enact a street fair performance. Any creature who can see them and stands within 10 ft. must make a WIS Save at a DC of 14. On a failed save they are charmed or frightened by them.

Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 ( 1d4+ 3) bludgeoning damage

Toy Guardians

7nth-level Toymaster feature

When a creature makes a melee attack against you or any of your allies while your toy construct swarm is within five feet of you or them and the creature fails the attack, as a reaction the swarm can make a melee attack against that enemy with an advantage. On a hit add your INT bonus to the damage.

Spy Network

11nth-level Toymaster Feature

Your toy construct swarm disperses in a 90 ft. radius around you as a bonus action. Individually your toy constructs have 14 AC and 5(2d4) HP. For 1 minute you can hear and see through their senses. You have PB with perception skill checks while using this feature. While you’re using the toy construct swarm senses you are deaf and blind. The toy construct swarm can’t take any other actions while using this feature unless an augment allows an additional effect for your action. At the end of this bonus action, the toy constructs reassemble in an open 5 ft. space nearest you. You can reuse this feature after a short rest.

The Last Laugh

15nth- level Toymaster feature

While your toy construct swarm has at least one augment active it can disperse towards up to 3 creatures within 5 ft from one another within their movement range and detonate in the creature’s space or within 5 ft of the creatures using an action. If the toy constructs are within the creature’s space they have a DEX Save of DC: 15  for half damage or on a hit take 4d8 fire damage. Any creature within 10 ft. when the toy construct swarm detonates, can make a DEX Save of  DC:12  or take 2d8 fire damage. It will take 24 hours to rebuild your toy construct swarm after the explosive detonation given you already have spare parts to create them.

Alternatively, once your toy construct swarm disperses towards the creatures the artificer can choose to have the constructs pop colored paper confetti, smoke, or fireworks and have all affected creatures within 5 ft of the creatures make a WIS Save of DC:16 on a failed they are stunned for 1 minute. This does not destroy the toy construct swarm. The swarm reforms immediately afterward in a five ft. square next to you.
